Interview

They are hiring a safety professional who can still be kind

Most decisions are made on how you handle people in a mess, not on whether you can recite an aircraft type. Write the stories now. Speak them out loud. Then stop sounding rehearsed.

STAR card — 90 seconds, then stop

Print this. Put it next to the camera. The video and the DFW 2-on-1 eat the same six stories.

UNTIL THE WINGS · STAR CARD
Say it in 90 seconds. If you cannot, you do not have a story. You have a vibe.

S Situation — one sentence. Place, time, who.
T Task / threat — what was at risk if you did nothing.
A Action — what YOU did with your hands. Not “we.” Not “the team.”
R Result — how it ended for the other person. Number if you have one.

THE SIX YOU NEED
1. Angry customer (wrong, loud, or both)
2. A rule you enforced when it cost you
3. Teammate conflict you did not leak
4. Last-minute change you absorbed
5. A mistake you owned in public
6. A time you stayed

NEVER SAY
Travel benefits · jumpseating · Cancun · crash pads · pay · “I love to travel”
A FAR you invented · a ramble that never answers the question they asked

ALWAYS
Use the recruiter’s name. Repeat the question. Stop talking. Safety first, then service.

WHY AMERICAN (one breath)
Network, bases, 2027 training pipeline, safety-then-care. Not “largest airline.”

From the floor

What candidates keep repeating

Paraphrased from r/cabincrewcareers, r/flightattendants, and drops we have checked. Not policy. Full list on the floor notes page.

The practice take is the only retry

Candidates say the practice question is the one you can redo. A live prompt that glitches is not a do-over unless support resets it. If the recorder dies mid-answer, email the address in the invite the same hour.

Feeling like you bombed is not a result

Overtime, filler words, “I’m a little nervous,” a ramble you cut short — people who wrote all of that still got F2F and CJOs. Recruiters are not grading a TED talk. They are grading whether you can finish a thought.

Prompts people keep reporting

Not a leaked script, and the set changes: why American, what makes a good flight attendant, a difficult customer, a coworker who is drinking at work, a safety-vs-service bind. Keep five stories, not fifteen memorized speeches.

Do not read a cheat sheet

Eyes dropping to notes reads as a recording of a recording. Bullet the story in your head. Look at the camera lens, not your own face.

ODVI can follow a quiet stretch

Pending recruiting review is not a closed door. The invite describes a self-guided video, situational questions, and a practice question. Test the setup. Use the practice. Then record.

Do not say this in the room

  • “I love to travel” / “the flight benefits” / jumpseating / Cancun. You do not have the job. People who asked about benefits in the room were the first ones gone. Repeated on Reddit until it is folklore.
  • Pay, vacation, crash pads, “which base is easiest”. Same category. Ask after a CJO, or ask about training week structure and what makes a new hire succeed on reserve.
  • A policy you invented. If you do not know the American procedure, say you would follow the published manual and the lead. Do not write a FAR on the spot.
  • Trash a last employer or a teammate. They are hiring someone who will lock a galley door with a stranger every trip. Loyalty is the test.
  • A ramble that never answers the question they asked. CJO write-ups: people who did not get offers often did not answer in the shape of the prompt. Repeat the question, then STAR, then stop.

Questions that keep showing up

Why do you want to be a flight attendant?

Do not say travel benefits. Talk about safety responsibility, service under pressure, and a specific public-facing example that proves you already do the job in another uniform.

Tell us about a time you dealt with a difficult customer.

STAR. Situation in one sentence, the obstacle, the action you took (listen, options, follow-through), and a measurable or observable result. End on the passenger, not on how you felt.

A passenger refuses to sit down when the seatbelt sign is on. What do you do?

Safety first, then service. Calm voice, explain the rule, offer a reason they can accept, escalate by procedure if they still refuse. Never invent a policy.

How would you handle two passengers arguing?

Separate the heat from the cabin. Get to eye level, one person at a time, keep the aisle moving, involve the lead if it becomes a safety issue. Do not referee a personal dispute in the galley gossip.

Are you willing to relocate / work holidays / live on reserve?

Yes, with a concrete plan: where you would live, who watches your life at home, and that you understand two years of straight reserve at American. Hedging here is a no-hire.

Tell us about a time you failed.

Pick a real miss with a small enough blast radius that you still look employable. Own it, name the fix, and show the new habit. Do not blame the system.

What does customer service mean on an airplane?

Safety is the product. Comfort is how you deliver it. A good answer mentions sterile cockpit, medicals, and the passenger who will never thank you.

How do you work on a team you did not choose?

Crews remix every trip. Give an example of matching someone else’s pace, taking the ugly task, and leaving the next person a clean galley.

Why American — not Delta, United, or Southwest?

Know the network, the bases, the 2027 training pipeline, and something true (hubs, APFA, international). Generic “largest airline” answers die in the 2-on-1.

Do you have questions for us?

Ask about training week structure, how base is assigned in week 3, or what makes a new hire successful on reserve. Do not ask about jumpseating to Cancun.
